Conservatives back revised safer routes to schools scheme!

Local Conservative Councillors Geoff Gollop and Ashley Fox have thrown their weight behind new road safety measures planned for Westbury on Trym CE Primary School.

The revised scheme is part of the Council's Safer Routes to Schools (SRTS) programme and is due to go out to public consultation before getting the final go-ahead.

Designed to encourage more children to have the confidence to walk or cycle to school, the key features of the current proposals include such pedestrian safety enhancements as:-

two 12 metre speed tables on the approaches to the school a 20 mph speed limit around surrounding streets pavement widening at key points to slow traffic flows and reduce road crossing distances

Cllr Gollop said: "Westbury on Trym CE Primary School, built on a narrow bend of a busy major road, is situated at a very dangerous location for those on foot.

"Together with my Council colleague Ashley Fox, local parents and the school, we have campaigned for many years to get some road safety improvements installed for this often forgotten part of the city.

"Now, at last, there is some funding available to make this area safer for children.

"I urge people to support this revised scheme by responding positively to the Council's consultation team.

"At a time of ever-increasing budgetary constraint on Council spending, opportunities like this are becoming few and far between."
